We like reissues of low-key LPs, and 'Devil Between My Toes' is no exception. Far from the Velvet Undergroundy faux-modesty of "woah, they only sold 10,000 copies at first, and look where they are now!", Guided By Voices' first album from 1987 only sold 300. The band even embarked on creating an album specifically for loners, with this one intended only for solo enjoyment: "an album for me", in bandleader Robert Pollard's own words. Sonically, this manifests as a long and doomy indie rock n' roll riptide. Whether there be uptempo ranch bangers like 'Discussing Wallace Chambers' or 'Hank's Little Fingers', or future lo-fi acoustic bits like 'Cyclops' or 'Bread Alone', it all operates in the same brilliant, raw breath.
